The Challenge
Improving the internal SAP-based project management system used by NTA.

About NTA
NTA is the Israeli government company responsible for planning and constructing the Tel Aviv Light Rail and Metro systems. This case study focuses on improving the internal SAP-based project management system to monitor progress, budget, risks, and milestones across multiple train lines and construction phases.
The problem
-
Complex System with Heavy Data - the system had to support a large amount of technical and managerial data from multiple fields: Schedules, Work plans, Budgeting, Document management, Risk analysis and more.
-
Multi-Line Structure - there are numerous train lines (Red, Green, Purple, Metro Lines), each with sub-projects and phases. The previous system made it difficult to move between lines and get an overview or drill-down into specific details.
The solution
-
Persistent Top Navigation Bar
Key functions such as "Schedule", "BIM", "Budget", and "Risk Management" were placed in a fixed navigation bar at the top to allow users to quickly jump between system modules. -
Expandable Side Panel for Line Browsing
A collapsible side panel allows users to view and navigate between all lines and sub-projects with a tree-view structure. This improves clarity and enables faster access to relevant data.
Users Pain Points
Overwhelming and massy amount of information on each screen
Difficulty locating specific line data due to deep hierarchical structure
Lack of contextual information: users had to jump between different tabs to get a full picture
Features
Hierarchical Line Tree
The left sidebar shows all LRT and Metro lines with expandable nodes down to sub-phases and WBS elements.

Project Summary Tab
Users can view and edit key metadata (budget, local authorities, WBS code) in a clean, form-based layout.
Smart Search with Filters
Advanced search functionality allows users to locate lines, contractors, or documents instantly, with filters by status, date, line, and project type.

Learning & Takeaways
Behind every milestone, budget sheet, and WBS code, there’s a person trying to make sense of it all. This project proved that when UX design centers the user - not just the data - everything works better. Information is easier to find, actions are more confident, and collaboration improves. In heavy infrastructure, strategic UX is the difference between a system that slows people down, and one that helps them build the future.
